“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
This has been a scripture that would always boggle my mind…I mean, who would be joyful in getting beaten, whipped, stripped naked, and then having to carry a splintered tree to a hill and get nailed to it? If that wasn’t bad enough, hanging there on that tree with those around shouting mocking threats! If you have seen the movie Passion, you would be able to get the mental picture I want you to see.
Really…who would have joy in that?
My question is why?
Since I am a very analytical person, I looked up the word joy in my handy dandy Strong’s Concordance. This is what I found:
From the Greek. 5479 Chara (khar-ah) cheerfulness. i.e. calm delight-an exceeding joy.
So for the “calm delight” that was set before Jesus, He endured the cross and scorned its shame…
What was the calm delight that was set before him?
I decided to compile a short list of the Joys that were set before Him…this list is not all inclusive…just short:
- The joy of going back home…being in perfect union with God once again!
- To reconcile God’s most prized possessions (humans) to Himself.
- To fulfill the perfect Law of God.
- To destroy any and all works of the enemy!
- To bring us peace that surpasses all understanding!
There were many other “Joys” that were set before Christ that caused Him…motivated Him…to endure a criminals death. He knew what he would endure would cause a delight in Him eternally…
So my question to you is this:
What are the “JOYS” set before you that can motivate you to endure what you are facing?
